Common Cat Ailments – Prevention and Treatment

If you own kittens, then you must be worried about their health. Cats can have serious illnesses that can eventually lead to their death. You do not want that to happen. For you to be prepared, you need to know the common cat ailments and how to prevent and treat them.

The first common ailment in cats, and other mammals, are the fleas. Fleas are pin-sized insects that jump to your kittens to feed on their blood. Fleas are most common in warm weather. They are able to inflict infectious diseases such as tapeworms. Fleas can cause ailments to your kittens such as anemia and allergic dermatitis. To prevent fleas, you can have flea collars, powders and liquid baths from pet stores that prevents fleas from going anywhere near your kittens. You can also get monthly treatments from veterinarians for prevention. You can also try checking your kitten for fleas. Fleas often go to the places near the kitten’s belly or at the tip of the tail. You can also put plant marigolds and chrysanthemums on your yard. These plants are natural insecticides that prevent fleas from coming.

Hairballs are also an ailment common to the feline species. They are tube-shaped masses of hair fibers. Cats normally clean themselves and swallow their own fur in the process. Hairs are indigestible, so cats would vomit it every now and then. If you observed that your kitten has been vomiting hairballs more than once a week, or have foul-smelling hairballs, you should quickly go to the veterinarian to get the kitten checked up.
